Nyko Zoom

  • Cost: $30 USD (average)
  • Quantity: 1
  • Description: The Zoom reduces the play range required to enjoy Kinect software by up to 40 percent, allowing you to play closer to your TV. Zoom's wide-angle lens also enables two people to play in an area normally only suitable for a single player making it ideal for those in smaller apartments or dorm rooms. Specially designed optical lenses fit over the Kinect sensor and clip into place making set up a breeze with nothing to plug in. No additional software or calibration is required. The design of the Zoom blends seamlessly with the look and feel of the Kinect. The Zoom opens up a whole new world of Kinect play to those who previously lacked the space required to fully enjoy it. Does not include Kinect sensor.
  • Features:
    - Reduces play range up to 40 percent
    - Wide-angle lens

Conclusion
Well, it does what it claims. You can stand 4' away and it will detect your head and 2 hands. It will not detect your feet, nor if you move away or closer to it, it loses its tracking because in my second pic, that circle has all kinds of stuff moving around (fading in and out) and I think it confuses kinect more or less as it doesn't know what to track. So, it does what it claim, but it will not let you play any game successfully.

I also attempted re-calibrating, and then I tried Kinect Sports. I know KS is pretty flawless except for a few hiccups here and there. It didn't work at all. I couldn't hover my hand long enough for an event to start. At this point, I didn't deem it worthy to try any other game. I did try to take some pics, but this is with my phone so they aren't super clear, I did stand in the same position so you can get an idea of what it does, it creates a tunnel basically. Also it's hard to notice, but the feet issue, you are stuck on your knees because it can't detect your feet, it's really stupid, and I don't understand how this is on the shelves.

NOTICE: It clips onto Kinect, there is a warning on the package that you can scratch your lenses! I didn't heed the warning, fortunately I was very careful with it.

Unfortunately, it's a waste of money. I thought maybe it was something people were doing or their setup, but it just doesn't work. The reason is I believe Kinect is set to detect at certain ranges. This thing increases that by literally zooming in, however if you take a normal step back, without it, it would be normal to Kinect, this thing makes you seem like you are jumping like 4' back. Hypothetically, I'm sure it sounded like a good idea, but it doesn't work. I have no idea how this passed QA. Luckily, I was able to return it, at this point, I wouldn't bother wasting $ on it, but if you want to try it, go for it just make sure you can return it.

Thumbs Up RE: [Accessories] Nyko Zoom
Thanks for confrming that. I think Microsoft needs to put out a warning like they did before this was released, but make it even stronger, that nobody should buy this because it will just mess up the Kinect if used. I don't know how Nyko have managed to get away with this! Angry Also wasn't it Nyko's fan cooler add-on that blew up Xbox 360s? Lol! (OK, not quite blow up, but did apparently cause some kind of burning and kill the console. Also that was their first cooler, maybe future models were OK.)

RE: [Accessories] Nyko Zoom
Yeah it was their first cooler, I've always had 50% luck with Nyko, some of their stuff worked and some didn't. I would just think MS would of provided something if it was really going to work.

That's what I thought. I'm sure Microsoft tested all kinds of lenses and found that the ones they finally decided on gave the best quality at the shortest distance they could manage, I seriously doubt just slapped some lenses on Kinect and said "That'll do." lol! Maybe for Kinect 2 they'll have 2 sensors/cams pointing at just the right angles so that they combine perfectly and cover a much wider (as in wider height, if you get what I mean?) angle so that you can stand a lot closer?

RE: [Accessories] Nyko Zoom
Right! I have no idea what Nyko was thinking. Even logically, if you think about it, Kinect has to know your distance so it moves you accordingly in the game. When you magnify something of large mass, it doesn't have make as big movements so how in the heck would it of worked in the first place lol

I hope there's not a kinect 2, or give us kinect1 owners a freebie or something. lol

Huh? They're already working on Kinect 2, but it'll obviously be for the next-gen Xbox since they've already pointed out that the Xbox 360 can't even use the full resolution of Kinect 1 without a few tricks due to the way the Xbox 360 distributes the USB2 bandwidth. And they (if Kinect 2 is bundled with the next-gen Xbox, which it probably will be after Epic's comments) won't be out until the end of next year at the earliest and even then I doubt they'll drop the Xbox 360 and Kinect 1 when it comes out the way they did the original Xbox since I'm sure they learned their lesson for doing that, lol! (Customers and developers were NOT happy about that!)

RE: [Accessories] Nyko Zoom
Ah crap I didn't even know that. Hmm I was going to buy a new xbox shortly as I still have one of the originals with the RRoD fixed, but if they are making all new crap for next year, then I'll probably just wait.
You sure about that? Everything I found searching says 2015...

The next generation is already "late", there's normally a new (next-gen) console every 4 or 5 years. The Wii U is out next year and Microsoft aren't going to let Nintendo get much of a head start, definitely not a 3 year head start as that would be suicide! There were Microsoft job adverts and stuff a few months ago about working on the next-gen Xbox and Kinect. I'm sure they'll be revealed at next year's E3.
Here's one about Kinect 2:

RE: [Accessories] Nyko Zoom
spreading rumors is completely irresponsible. Just because you want the next gen to start, doesn't mean it will.

the Wii U does not worry Microsoft or Sony. It's barely faster than the 6 year old 360. People will wait just like they skipped a great Dreamcast to wait for the PS2. You're going to get a Wii U just to get a new controller? Besides Nintendo first party, the Wii U will only get 360 and PS3 ports.

Microsoft is making good money and doing very well. The only thing to get them moving forward is Sony. Considering how badly PS3 is doing with respect to where PS2 was and considering that it's been completely hacked, I'm sure Sony is rushing the PS4 as fast as they can. They'll never recoup the money wasted on the Cell processor (counting costs of the foundries built and money invested) and thus need to make the PS3 a distant memory with the PS4.

And Sony will be the reason why Microsoft moves faster, not Nintendo.

I bet Microsoft will announce the nextBox at next year's E3. But it won't come out until 2013 at the earliest and more likely 2014 (unless Sony also announces which will move the Microsoft timetable to 2013).

How is it irresponsible? And it's not just rumours it's logical especially since it's fact that Microsoft are well into the creation of the next-gen Xbox and Kinect. You don't think the Wii U worries Microsoft or Sony but neither did the Wii and most people thought it would flop as it's basically just a slightly improved Gamecube with motion controllers (and had pretty poor 3rd party support originally) but look what happened to that! Neither Microsoft or Sony can assume that the Wii U will flop. The Dreamcast isn't a very good comparison since unlike the Wii the Saturn was in 3rd place (totally undeservedly) when the Dreamcast was released, Sega didn't have as much money as Nintendo must have now, Sony had various exclusive deals including a deal with EA and EA publically stated that they would "kill the Dreamcast" plus not only did Sony already lead the market with the PS1 but they overhyped the PS2 with tech demos, pre-rendered CGI and claims that it would have "Toy Story quality graphics" when in reality it wasn't much better than the Dreamcast and was totally blown out of the water by the Xbox when that was released. (As in the Xbox was much more powerful, the PS2 still sold loads more.) Then there's the fact of Sony pricing the PS2 lower than standalone DVD players in Japan when it was first launched which is why the PS2 had a ridiculously low attach rate for the first few months there since some people didn't even buy it for games at first and most people only bought 1 or 2 games at the time. The same thing happened with the PS3, except Sony priced it (MUCH) lower than standalone Blu-Ray players all over the world.

The 2012/2013 date for the next-gen Xbox has been consistent in news throughout the years and Microsoft have even said so themselves in the past. I actually thought even that was too late a date a few years ago but then obviously I couldn't have predicted Kinect being released in 2010 (which is when I always thought the next-gen Xbox would be released) which has increased the Xbox 360's lifespan. Check out this article, which has been updated throughout until the current time, about the 2012/2013 date:

RE: [Accessories] Nyko Zoom
The Nyko Zoom scratched up my Kinect horribly. I don't recommend it to ANYONE.

I don't play Kinect for the graphics. I don't play Kinect to get into shape. I play Kinect because it is fun. I play Kinect because it is innovative. I play Kinect... because it is the future.
