My kinect weight loss journey
I got the kinect the day it came out to use as a weight loss tool for my main source of exercising. After playing with it for a few days, I got lazy! My kids (son who just turned 5 and almost 6 month old daughter) and the holidays just tired me out.

I decided on 01/04/11 that I was going to start eating better and using my kinect regularly! A little background: two years ago I lost over 50 pounds eating healhy and using my wii fit as my only source of exercise. I got down into the 150's and was soooo proud of myself! I was much smaller than when I got pregnant with my son and loving it!!

After a 1500 mile move, new job, etc I got lazy and gained about 25 pounds back and then got prgnant with my daughter in November 2009. I gained 40 pounds throughout my pregnancy and weighed in at 215 pounds the morning I went in to have my daughter (eeeek!!!). Three weeks after having my daughter I started using my wii and eating healthy again. I lost the 40 pounds pretty quickly and was back to my pre pregnancy weight of 175. This is around the time I traded in my wii so that I could get the kinect, used it a few days, stopped, and gained 8 pounds back weighing in at 183. Ugh!!!!

Since 01/04/11, I have used my kinect regularly and have changed my eating habits for the better. My main exercise consists of Dance central but I also have added in some walking and your shape: fitness evolved. My son loves playig the dance game so it's fun "working it" while playing together Smile

My goal is to get to 135 pounds. I don't ever remember seeing such a small number on the scale, but I am determined. My goal is to get to this weight by my birthday; June 15. Since 01/04/11 I have lost 8 pounds and currently am back to my pre pregnancy weight (175)... Again! Lol

Please feel free to post your success as well!! I'd love the additional motivation to keep going. I use my husbands live account, but feel free to add me: junnyjun. You'll know if it's me or not by the games that are being played lol (him- non kinect games).

01/04/11- 183
01/10/11- 175

RE: My kinect weight loss journey
Good luck on your journey! My GF has Biggest Loser but has gotten frustrated with the menus and stuff so rarely puts it in. Based on reviews and stuff here "Your Shape" is pretty great. I also think Dance Central is a great workout.

Anyway, just curious how you have liked Your Shape and DC as your workout plan.

Hello and thanks!

I like your shape a lot and have done it every other day (oooooh the pain!), but I loooove dance central. You can play for so long and not even realize it! Then- you try hard to beat your scores (or get 5 stars on easy, med, and hard on all the songs you've already done) and the next thing you know you've been dancing for over and hour and sweating like crazy Smile The best part is, even if you're horrible at dancing and have no rhythm (me), it's still fun and a good workout.

I've heard mixed reviews of BL... I kind of want to get it but I think my next game will be zumba and/or sports (so I can play with my son).

Good luck to your girlfriend! Once she finds something she likes, I'm sure she'll have an easier time sticking to it! My husband has a love/hate relationship with the kinect. He loves that it's motivating me to work out regularly, but hates that I take his game time away to actually do it Smile

Hello!

My son is no stranger to video games, especially on the 360 Smile I wouldn't usually play them but we allow him to play for 30 min in the morning during school weeks (he's only on pre-k) and he gets a little more time on the weekends, and now at night with me with the kinect. My just-turned-five year old is probably better at some games than adults are lol

My husband unfortunately can't play too many motion video games. When he was 18 he developed juvenile arthritis and for these last 10 years since it started it's got much worse. He can move around and what not, but cannot strain himself the way the kinect has you move. He sticks to his madden and call of duty games Smile

Thanks for the advice. I agree Dance Central is a ton of fun. Especially when you start using break it down, time just flys. Glad you like Your Shape. We'll probably talk about selling or trading in BL for YS at some point. It's just sitting there not being used. I find it to be kind of boring when I tried it to see what it was like. The YS demo seemed like it would be more intriguing to keep up with.

I'd highly recommend sports. Simply fun and also a good workout, especially track and field. I've heard mixed things about Zumba, but that may be fun too.

RE: My kinect weight loss journey
Good luck on your weight loss journey. I too bought Xbox360 Kinect for weight loss. As our children have already grown up and moved away. I will take this journey with you if you would like.
Let me give you a little background on myself, so that we can get better aquainted. When I was younger I was very thin, just like my daughter is now. When I got pregnant with both my children I gained 50 pounds with each, but soon lost 95% of it after each pregnancy. I then started to gain a little here and gain a little there. Before I knew it after I hit 30 I had gained about 30 pounds from my pre-pregnancy weight. I would diet and lose half of it, but never get close to what I was. Which was ok with me at the time. But once I hit 40, I went through a divorce and quit smoking, I gained another 30 pounds fairly quickly. In 2008 I was diagnosed with breast cancer and went through a mastectomy then chemo. People say you lose weight with chemo, but that is not true, I gained which isn't all that uncommon. I spent the past 2 years going through another mastectomy and numerous surgeries for reconstruction. I am finally at the end of my reconstruction with only one more procedure to go. Yipppeee Big Grin Through all of this I have gained another 10 pounds. I lost 10 pounds last year by walking 10,000 steps a day and dancing on In the Groove on the pc, and eating better. Then I had another surgery and couldn't do much and got lazy. I have gained back all that I had lost before the surgery. I vowed to lose weight no matter what as I am now pre-diabetic. I have a sedentary job, so I don't get much movement at work. Every bit of movement I get is after work.
So back to today. We bought the Xbox 360 Kinect for Christmas for my husband and myself. He doesn't get into the exercising part of it, but does enjoy the sports, adventures and kinectimals. Wink He has tried DC once and gave up quickly as he felt silly. He has also tried YS with the yoga part of it. He is more into games like Dragon Age and Halo. He thinks it is a fantastic idea to get people moving. He doesn't need to lose any weight himself as he is thin already. All in all, I am on my own on this journey. I have started to watch what I am eating and try to do the Kinect at least every other night working towards 5 nights a week for an hour a night. I would love to go on this journey with you as a support person. My user name on XBox Live is LadyDiane61 if you wanna look me up. Big Grin

RE: My kinect weight loss journey
Hi and thank you for replying!

I would love the "company" on this weight loss journey! I just want to say way to go! for all you have fought through. Breast cancer runs on the maternal side of my family and my heart alwas goes out to those that face that battle!

Sorry I did not reply sooner as I have a 5 year old and a 6 month old fighting the flu right now (my 6 mo old has the flu AND fifths disease... not fun!)

I think it's great that you and your husband are enjoying the kinect and that it is going to be an important tool in your weight loss! It makes exercising fun and somehing you really do not mind doing regularly! Even though your husband doesn't like officially exercising wih the kinect, he's still getting a workout playing sports and the other games Smile

I will ask my hubby how to add someone to the friends list and add you or feel free to add me first if you know how: junnyjun. It's my husbands account but I'm hoping to convince him to change his name to something that would work for both of us lol

I also want to add that I am down to 173! 10 pounds gone with the help of the kinect!!!!

Forgot to add re: zumba... A lot of the more recent reviews seem to mention an update that appears to fix what the older reviews were claiming were big problems. Fingers crossed!

Just a FYI, all the reviews here are solid, don't trust big reviewers as they don't care as much as we do Big Grin

RE: My kinect weight loss journey
I would like to join this Kinect weight loss journey. I love to game and received the Kinect from my husband for Christmas. With the brutally cold weather keeping me from walking outside, I have decided to use my Kinect for weight loss. I have always battled weight my entire life. I weigh in at 199 at 5'9. My goal is 145 and I am excited about being able to game while I lose weight!!!! I am GRITSplus1 on xbox live. Please feel free to add me on xbox live if you would like to keep each other accountable and motivated on this weight loss journey. I would really enjoying having friends on this journey for motivation and accountability. I do believe accountability and motivation are the key for many of us who battle weight on a daily basis. I plan to pick up either Dance Central or Your Shape tomorrow as my first weight loss/workout game. Any suggestions as to which one I should get? Thanks, GRITS

RE: My kinect weight loss journey
Hi grits, thanks for joining us!!!

Of the two games you're debating, I would recommend dance central! It gets you, and keeps you, moving! I'm personally starting to get bored with your shape just after these few days but have played dance central every day for almost 2 weeks (even on my "rest" days I WANT to play!)

I think with the great support even just here on the forum, it will help motivate the few of us on here, and even just people posting to find "success stories", which is how I found out about this site!

Once again, thanks for joining us and please continue to post about your success, and even struggles so we can all help each other!

Feel free to add me on the xbox: junnyjun.

RE: My kinect weight loss journey
Hey, I have been reading your stories and I wish you all the best of luck. I hope I can also join in on this journey. I received my kinect for Xmas off my partner with DC and your shape, I find DC very fun but it ends up killing me with some of the moves you have to do. Your shape is good but it just doesn't pick up my leg movements, which is very annoying has I no I'm doing it right! Anyway I just want to get in shape I just need the motivation my gamertag is ScenicArchon feel free to add me and let's all try to stay motivated together. Smile

RE: My kinect weight loss journey
Thanks Jun for the advice and cograts on the 10 pound loss! I decided to start out with Your Shape today and possibly order Dance Central from Amazon, since there is a $10 price cut there. I am adding you junnyjun, ScenicArchon and LadyDiane61 to my friends list on XBL. Aside from keeping up with each other on XBL, should we agree to post our progress here at least once a week to keep others motivated? I will be trying out YourShape tonight for the first time and I am very excited about it. Smile

RE: My kinect weight loss journey
If you girls are going to gang up for a weight loss thing, Zumba lets you do online 8-player dance classes with voice chat. You girls can dance and talk together. That ought to be some fun.

I sent in an order for Zumba Fitness (I like dancing and the music sounds fun in Zumba). Hopefully the patch fixes things. If you don't have an internet connection for your 360, apparently, you can send in the disc back to Majesco for a replacement that has the fix built-in. Hopefully, all Zumba discs at retail now have the remastered version, but i doubt it since they probably printed a bunch of the original discs for the holidays already.

from the Majesco website:
http://www.zumbafitnessgame.com/titleupdate/
Majesco will send you a re-mastered disc that includes the Title Update already on it. A re-mastered Title Update disc is only available for current owners of Zumba Fitness for Kinect.

Note: re-mastered discs will be available by the end of December. Check back here for an update on exact availability date.

RE: My kinect weight loss journey
Grits I accepted your friend request Smile along with Diane and maybe someone else? Lol. I think updating once a week would is a great idea! Also feel free to post anytime in between as well Smile

dirty- zumba is the next one I'm ordering. I'm holding out a week or twoin hopes that amazon drops it down to the $29 price that it was last week! I'm kicking myself for not jumping on it then but I just didn't have the extra money to spend on a game Sad I'm really excited to try it, though! Thanks for the heads up that the bugs seemed to be worked out wih it!!!
