“Extremely innovative” NBA basketball Kinect game “in the works” – reconfirmed

It was mighty long ago that we heard anything about the semi-announced NBA Kinect game. Up until the latest press release by Majesco (found by eagle-eyed 123KINECT frequenter CorellianRogue), which included the following snippet, discussing an “extremely innovative” basketball Kinect game.

Finally, we are very excited by the development progress of our extremely innovative, motion-based game developed in partnership with the NBA, and look forward to announcing details next month.

Sure, details are still amiss, but it’s good to see that Majesco is still working together with the NBA to create their next big Kinect game. We’re surely looking forward to those details that Majesco promises!

Perfect fit?

Even though Kinect Sports: Season Two has basketball DLC upcoming in April, a (licensed) NBA basketball game makes a lot of sense for Kinect, and is still not in the market yet. When done right, this game could be a big hit for Majesco in my view. A big hit, just like Zumba Fitness which continues to be the cornerstone of Majesco Entertainment (in terms of raking in revenues).

Thankfully the NBA isn’t gay like the NFL otherwise EA would of scooped up an exclusive agreement with them, and these types of games would have never been made. Kudos to Majesco for taking the plunge.

LOL . im excited but i dont know how they will make this work for a full 5 on 5 game. I think that a 2 on 2 or 3 on 3 arcade game would be easier to do and much more fitted for the kinect mainly because NBA is one of those games that is better with a controller because of the game mechanics and smooth controls (nba2k series seems to keep improving each year) so to transfer that experience to a controller free experience
Majesco has to bring a game that not only feels right but work well. I am happy with kinect and the impact it has on the gaming world. People said it would last but it’s still going strong.

  Motion Explosion actually looks pretty good and seems to have great 1:1 tracking. (I want to at least rent it but it still hasn’t been released in the UK! 🙁 It’s supposed to be released this month though.) Also Majesco are mainly a publisher, we don’t know which development studio is actually making NBA Kinect yet.

    I’ll just add that Alvin & The Chipmunks: Chipwrecked was made by Behaviour Interactive, Hulk Hogan’s Main Event was made by Panic Button, Motion Explosion! was made by Artech Studios and Jillian Michaels’ Fitness Adventure was made by n-Space. So each of those games had a different developer which means the quality of those games had nothing to do with each other and will have nothing to do with NBA Kinect’s quality unless one of those developers is making it.

If you read the the review here he says it’s good, it’s just that he doesn’t score like a lot of websites, 6 out of 10 here means just good. Judging by not just that review but videos too it looks fun. I’m not saying it looks amazing but then it’s not supposed to be, it’s a minigame game but it just happens to look like a good one.
And yes, Majesco don’t have a great track record but they have released good games like Psychonaughts (I never actually got around to buying that and it didn’t actually sell that well but it’s highly praised) and Worms 4. There are probably games on other platforms that are good too but I just know about Xbox stuff. (And Sega consoles but I can’t remember what Majesco released for those.) Now they’ve said they’re restructuring to focus on fewer, bigger, high quality titles that gives me a bit more hope that this will be good, especially since they need to make money as they’re not doing well and badly made flops won’t help them. I just don’t think you should count out games until you’ve seen them.
