Rumor: Kinect 2 will see everything!

We all know that Kinect has a few limitations: the camera is pretty low resolution for today’s standards, the framerate is not fast enough to track super fast movement and detection is not good enough to track the position of the wrist or individual fingers. Still, the games for Kinect are a ton of fun to play and the possibilities are endless! But what if there was a Kinect sensor that didn’t have the previously mentioned limitations… What if there was a second generation Kinect in development? Well, sources indicated that such a thing is going to happen! Kinect 2 will be a reality!

Sources of gaming website Eurogamer apparently spoke out about a new Kinect being in development. A Kinect that will be superior to its predecessor we all know. This Kinect 2 will have a high enough resolution to be able to read your emotions, read your lips and even determine your mood! If this is true it will open up a whole new range of possibilities, for both motion gaming and traditional gaming! How about playing Halo while Kinect ‘monitors’ your mood and will adjust the game accordingly to give you a more intense experience? How awesome would that be! For motion gaming this would mean that accuracy will be perfect: Kinect will see everything, your fingers, your wrists or even the position of your eyes!

But even better than all the technical updates to Kinect will be if it comes bundled or integrated with every Xbox! I mean, if that happens than there will be no more “Better with Kinect” or “Kinect only” labels that scare off hardcore gamers. Every game could integrate Kinect, any game could be a hybrid and best of all: Every game that uses Kinect will have the entire Xbox community as a market! No more “Kinect niche” and no more leaving out Kinect because only a portion of gamers has one.

When will it be out?

The question now is…when will this new Kinect sensor be out? Well, the source speaks about that it should be released with the new Xbox (and this makes sense because this new Kinect will need a much faster interface than the now used USB). So don’t expect this new Kinect to come out anytime soon. But when it comes out it might be the evolution to the revolution in gaming: a perfection of this new way of gaming, and with that an open door for developers to finally really let their creativity flow!

It’s not coming out now, it won’t be out for at least a year and it will be for the next-gen Xbox anyway, not the Xbox 360. (At least I seriously doubt it will work on the Xbox 360 because of the Xbox 360′s USB2 limitations.)

I dont think you will see fine movements like wrist and and fingers because it just about imposible to track that at all times in real world.. but I don expect a better camara and a closer 1 to 1 tracking system

I have to say you will see a kinect 2 and it will have a better camara for video and pictures and better one to one tracking, dont expect fine hand or fingure movments, Im sure a small nav controller would work for games the require the small hand movement a lot easy and simple to do and can be added to the current kinect system as well…

Of course it will be able to do fine hand and finger tracking since it will have a much higher resolution sensor and most likely a much higher frame-rate too. If not then what would be the point of releasing it? My prediction is that at least the IR projector & sensor, but possibly the RGB cam too, will be 1920×1080 and the frame-rate will be at least 60fps, possibly 120fps. I also think there could be 2 lenses for at least the IR sensor, aligned vertically and positioned so that when the inputs from both are combined Kinect 2 “sees” twice the vertical viewing angle as the current Kinect so therefore allows you stand much closer when playing games that use full body control. Plus since I think it will probably be bundled with all next-gen Xboxes you will also have motion-control joypads.

I still cant see it happening, full body and fine hand gestures at the same time and really the point to it all

Why can’t you see it happening? Kinect can already do fine hand movements as Kinect Sports 2 darts shows just to name one example and it can track reasonably fine finger movements closer up as the Kinect hacks show. The only reason it can’t track fine finger movements at 6ft+ is because of resolution (and a faster framerate would no doubt help too) so if you increase the IR sensor’s resolution (and IR projector, I don’t how many IR dots the current Kinect projects) by over 6 times (640×480 = 307,200 pixels, and even then most games only use Kinect’s IR sensor in 320×240 resolution, whereas 1920×1080 = 2,073,600 pixels) then you get a MASSIVE increase in accuracy and tracking fine finger movements should be pretty easy while also tracking the rest of the body at the same time even more accurately than the current Kinect..
