We all know that Kinect is used to amplify the gaming experience, but what the Gadget show has done with it is just unreal. They created a full on combat simulator that uses Kinect as means of (partial) input! Check out a summary of the simulator above or the full show below!

The ultimate simulator

The Gadget Show created an ultimate gaming simulator by combined several technologies. The cool thing: it relies on Kinect to work. This is what the simulator combines in order to provide the ultimate gaming experience:

  • Battlefield 3 (the game you play)
  • Igloo vision dome (8 projectors create a 360 degree wrap around screen)
  • Omni Directional treadmill (move around in any direction freely to move the in-game character)
  • Ambient light technology (light up the whole room with LED’s based on what happens on the screen)
  • appBlaster gun (gun to shoot with)
  • Custom software to move the screen around the Igloo vision dome
  • 12 Paintball guns to provide “force feedback” of getting shot

And then there is of course the Kinect sensor, which is used to track the player and detect crouching and jumping. So although it is not tracking movement (the treadmill does this) it is still essential for the gameplay experience.

A truly impressive combination of different companies with different technologies. Want to see how it is build and how it finally works? Check out the video below!

More Kinect

Personally I think Kinect could take over a few more things: For example the gun tracking could be done by Kinect and so could the movement. They could also get a few more gestures in like reloading, throwing grenades and melee attacks. Then it would be an even better simulator! Still, the final result looks like it is the greatest gameplay experience ever and I only wish I could’ve played in that.

What do you think? Will something like this ever reach us in our living rooms? Kinect might make it possible!
