Kinect for Windows is going to be a massive thing. Not only is Microsoft going to let developers create commercial Kinect for Windows applications, but their most important product lines (Xbox Dashboard, Windows 8, Windows phone 7, Xbox Live) are getting a ‘Kinect optimized’ interface (the Metro interface). So no doubt that Kinect for Windows is going to have a huge impact on the way we interact with computers. Now we also know that Windows is getting a special version of the Kinect sensor!

Windows Kinect Senor

According to a blogpost at the official Microsoft blog windows is getting its own Kinect sensor! So no more sensor at your computer with the Xbox logo on it: Windows will have its own Kinect hardware. So why is Windows getting its own Kinect hardware? Well according to the blogpost there are a few optimizations for the PC:

  • Shorter USB cable
  • Inclusion of a small dongle to improve coexistence with other USB peripherals
  • New firmware that allows object to be far closer to Kinect (50 cm)

Now we just need every PC to be shipped with a Kinect sensor and the world will be ready for the future!
