Erin Reynolds and her “Nevermind Team” are creating a biofeedback horror adventure game called Nevermind which uses heart rate monitoring to dynamically respond to your fear, anxiety and stress which affects the gameplay! They’re using Kickstarter to fund the game and you can watch the Kickstarter pitch video above.

Here’s Nevermind’s Kickstarter  press release:

Nevermind Game Embarks on Kickstarter

Critically-acclaimed, biofeedback-enhanced horror adventure mystery game seeking funding support to deliver a complete game to fans

Los Angeles – January 29, 2014   Nevermind, a critically-acclaimed proof-of-concept that uses biofeedback to create a uniquely haunting experience, launched a Kickstarter campaign today to make the game a real nightmare for horror and adventure fans everywhere. Players ready to conquer their fears can support Nevermind here on Kickstarter.

The mystery-adventure title blends the horror genre and puzzles in a surreal, near-future setting. Players become Neuroprobers, specialized physicians who use cutting-edge technology to venture into the minds of victims devastated by psychological trauma.

Nevermind  offers players an new horror gaming experience, challenging them to:

  • Keep calm. The game will get harder as you get scared. It does so by reading your heart rate variability – the consistency of the duration between heartbeats.
  • Solve puzzles. Players navigate the broken, chaotic minds of the deeply disturbed, coming face to face with horrors that would torment even the most calm and capable of players.
  • Develop real-world skills. Learn methods by which they can manage stress and anxiety outside the game, all while uncovering the deep, dark secrets that ruptured a patients’ sanity

Nevermind  was originally conceived as a Master’s degree thesis by industry veteran Erin Reynolds, who created an innovative prototype that haunted her nights as unfinished business. After the original student team moved on, Reynolds dreamed of completing the game. Now she has voluntarily left her job in order to make Nevermind the first game to fully leverage biofeedback science.

“I couldn’t just let  Nevermind  disappear into the subconscious of gamers,” said Reynolds, who is the creative director, project lead, artist and designer for  Nevermind. “We want gamers to confront their fears in the dark and twisted world of  Nevermind, knowing that only they can save themselves. We know with the support of new and existing fans for our Kickstarter, we’ll create a truly twisted yet meaningful game.”

Nevermind  has a lot of potential to actually help people through mindfulness techniques to manage their own stress and anxiety,” USC Creative Media & Behavioral Health Center Director Marientina Gotsis said. “I’ve been yearning for years for something like this to be put out in public. This is in tune with what we know in affective neuroscience, in terms of how the brain works, and is a very exciting experiment to combine both games and potential health benefits.”

All participants in the Kickstarter will receive a copy of the final game in addition to other rewards, including limited edition artwork, personalized art books, their name in the game’s credits, a unique bust in the Hall of Fears – where one’s own fears will be visually represented, and even a personalized mini-level designed and developed in custom  Nevermind  style.  Nevermind  has also set several stretch goals, including development for Oculus Rift and Xbox One, additional hardware support and an ever-growing list of levels and patients. Xbox One & Kinect 2

Although the game is initially being created for PCs and Macs using off the shelf heart-rate monitors they are also planning on releasing it for the Xbox One using Kinect 2! Here’s what they say on their Kickstarter page:

Although the current prototype is only available for PC, we will also be bringing Nevermind to Mac. On that note, we are thrilled to report that Nevermind has been pre-approved by Valve for release on Steam!

Furthermore we are excited to explore supporting the Oculus Rift and the Virtuix Omni, and are actively in conversation with Microsoft about bringing Nevermind to the Xbox One!

Nevermind uses biofeedback technology to detect your Heart Rate Variability while playing. When you start to become scared or anxious, the game will dynamically respond to your stress levels, which in turn directly affects gameplay.

The current demo features full biofeedback integration using an off-the-shelf Garmin heart monitor strap (similar to what one would use for exercise) as a means of proving out the technology. As part of Nevermind’s development, we will be aggressively looking to support as many biofeedback sensors as possible, especially those with existing market penetration. This includes upcoming devices from Garmin and Polar, as well as innovative camera technology like the Xbox One’s Kinect 2.0.

It seems that to ensure an Xbox One release though they would have to reach their $1,000,000 stretch goal as they talk about a new platform that has built-in biofeedback hardware and the only platform I can think of with that is Xbox One with Kinect 2!

$1,000,000 – New Platform – Integrated Hardware

There is yet another platform in particular that we’re excited about developing Nevermind for (HINT: it includes built-in biofeedback hardware) this would ensure that we could make it happen! Help us realize this goal in order to make this additional platform a reality!

More details to be revealed as we approach this stretch goal!

So if you want to play it on Xbox One with Kinect 2 then get pledging!

Gameplay & Story

Nevermind is a biofeedback-enhanced horror adventure game that takes you into the dark and twisted world within the subconscious minds of trauma victims.

As you explore surreal labyrinths and solve the puzzles of the mind, a biofeedback sensor monitors how scared or stressed you become with each passing moment. If you let your fears get the best of you, the game will become harder. If you’re able to calm yourself in the face of terror, the game will be more forgiving.

Nevermind’s goal is to create an unforgettable gameplay experience that also teaches players how to be more aware of their internal responses to stressful situations. If you can learn to control your anxiety within the disturbing realm of Nevermind, just imagine what you can do when it comes to those inevitable stressful moments in the real world…

Nevermind is – at its core – an adventure game (in the spirit of classic games like Myst), where you must explore strange worlds and solve puzzles to unlock the terrifying mystery that lurks within each patient’s inner psyche.

In Nevermind, you are a Neuroprober – a unique physician who, through the use of cutting-edge technology, is able to venture into the minds of psychological trauma victims for whom traditional treatment methods have proved ineffective.

As such, each “level” in Nevermind takes place within the surreal subconscious of one of these victims. Your goal is to explore the often dark and twisted world within, solving abstract puzzles as you recover fragments of memories (represented by photographs) surrounding the traumatic event.

Traumatic experiences, especially those left untreated, take their toll in countless ways, often triggering other serious problems as the victim’s subconscious desperately tries to cope. As a result, the patient’s mind doesn’t take kindly to those who attempt to peel back these layers, often prompting it to lash out in terrifying, unexpected ways.

Only the most vigilant of Neuroprobers can withstand the necessary waves of abuse to help their patient find true salvation.

Can you?
