Kung Fu Panda 2 - The good
  • A movie game that isn't about the movie, but extends it, wish more movie games were like this to be honest
  • Another plus for a movie game, it wasn't rushed as most are to meet the theater release date
  • There's a good variety of things mixed in the game, fighting moves are repetitive, but I'm not sure how much more advanced you could get with this kind of game
  • I think kids won't get too bored with it, however there's a couple levels that my 7 yr old found difficult

Kung Fu Panda 2 - The not so good
  • Graphics are so so, there's 2 CGI movies (intro/outro), but nothing like the movie graphics
  • No multiplayer
  • Loading times mixed in with story are kind of annoying
  • When you bow, it skips the movie...I tried to sit to rest in between and it kept skipping which didn't help resting time

Kung Fu Panda 2 - Story
Story mode starts right after the movie ends. Awesome idea and wish more movie games followed this suit. If you already know what's going to happen in a movie game, what's the point of playing it? Anyhow, leg went into all of the details on this one so I'll just point out my opinions on things.

The story is simple for the most part and honestly it kind of dragged on...I think there are about 15 levels consisting of the fighting and mini-games, it did only take me 2 1/2 hours to beat though.

Kung Fu Panda 2 - Kinect experience
Seems like developers are getting the hang of controls for kinect. I didn't have any issues with anything, 7 yr old had some trouble with it detecting him jumping, but other than that it works really well. Also when I popped it in, there was a small patch available, not sure if it resolved anything.

Kung Fu Panda 2 - Graphics/Sound
Graphics are on par for a movie game. Nothing amazing or quality, but it works. Kids like it, it is pretty colorful. Voiceovers have most of the regular characters, except I think there were different choices between KFP1 and KFP2 for some of them, so couldn't recognize them all. Jack Black has his lame wisecracks in it as well.
Sound effects are a good cartoony theme. I didn't pay attention to the background music so it must not be that good.

Kung Fu Panda 2 - Gameplay
I first started with Story mode. I went through the training, pretty simple moves, then started into the fighting. It was ok for the first couple of levels, then I got to some wolf level and I actually lost...I was like what the hell kind of kid game makes you lose. So I tried again, lost again. I then took some time to understand the fight system.

The fight system is not 1:1, but has about a half second delay, so it's not too bad. Probably the same as Fighters Uncaged. You can though kind of "queue" up moves. I learned if you keep doing different combinations quickly, the baddies don't get a chance to attack, but I mean you really have to mix everything up...I tried to keep doing a double punch but it lets you have one, after that, its their turn. In a wierd kind of way, its almost like if you keep repeating the same moves, the enemy becomes aware of what you are doing.

So after I learned that...I got to a boss. He kicked my ass because I didn't pay attention to the dodging. Well in doing so, I learned that when they glow red, you need to lean left or right to dodge. When it's orange, you have to duck. Ducking is super sensitive that if you move just a smidge, it turns it into a dodge and you get hit. I started realizing that you have to play a little strategy with this game. It further intrigued me.

Further into the game, I noticed that when you do a counterattack when the enemy dodges, you build..."ally points" I'll call them. When you get 3 of these points, you can call an ally via voice command, which also works great. I got to another part where I had very little life left, and I called my ally. After they defeated my enemy, it was a boss and I lost right away, so I had to start over again. This time I realized that when you don't call an ally, block all of their attack moves, you wear down their life. Once you "finish" them, you get life back. So now it gets to a point where you have to decide, do you finish the baddie with an ally quick and easy? Or do you sweat it out a few rounds in order to revive your life, but you have to be perfect otherwise all the life you lose, you might just replenish.

I found these little quirks they put into the game pretty interesting. I also appreciated the mix up in between fighting kind of a break mode. Some of the fight rounds were only 3 guys, but I have to say, it made me sweat trying to do these fast combos.

The rickshaw race thing was pretty cool. It's really accurate and its hard not to mess up.

The noodle game was also pretty cool. If you stir your noodles really fast and get it to your customer fast, you get bonus points (1000 instead of 250) and these bonus items, which helps you colllect iron/gold/ore/etc to help with your achievements.

The target game was another example of a shooter game. I am now VERY concerned about these shooter games coming out (gunstringer/heavy fire/whatever else). It has you aim with your left hand, your literally throw with your right hand. I think I was throwing coconuts or something. While you are trying to aim and throw at the same time, you have to duck to dodge. This becomes quite challenging for the most part. The aiming is very sensitive as well, that when I was throwing, my left hand would move just a bit and I'd miss the target. You get bonus points for combos. There are a few of these, one is a temple thing where they throw temple pieces at you and you have to catch them and throw them back while trying to destroy them. Another level had me in a snowball fight with the bunnies.

Anyhow, onto my concern, while aiming I was holding my arm up for about 5 minutes...It's probably a 10 minute game. My arm was so tired that I had to keep setting it down, if gunstringer and heavy fire have levels that last longer....I honestly don't know how many of us are going to like it. Try for yourself, hold your arm in one spot with like a flat hand forward, and move it left and right while holding steady for about 5 minutes.

The practice sessions are more of a simon says...Po says what move to do and you repeat, failing results in lower point score.

Once you beat the game, you unlock everything in free play mode. There's quite a lot to do in freeplay mode especially if you want achievements which I was trying since I like them Tongue Free play mode features all of the mini games plus the combat fighting...all with 3 difficulty levels. Also in the combat fight games, once you have your 3 ally points, you can call any ally, as long as you know their name (viper/mantis/tigress/monkey). I do see some replay value in here, but after that, it's about it. It would of been better if at least the scoring had live leaderboards to compete with friends, but its not there.

Kung Fu Panda 2 - Multiplayer options
It would of been very cool to have this type of game both with a coop story mode which could of been split screen simple or even on same screen, as well as a versus mode. It would of been a great addition to fight with the different characters.

Kung Fu Panda 2 - Achievements
I won't lie here, the achievements are somewhat easy. There's quite a few though and they make you go through both story mode and freeplay mode, so if you want a lot, you will have to play for a little bit.

Overall, looking at this game from a kids point of view, it's probably liked by 9 out of 10 kids. Looking at this game from an adults view, I found it well done for a fighting game. It's a good bag to try out different things and with the strategy element I discovered, it made it more interesting. Would I buy this game? No, definitely glad I didn't waste $ on it as the story mode was short and the freeplay is not much longer. Once you go through both modes, you pretty much have all of the achievements and there's really not much more to do. Kids love to replay/watch over and over things again so if its for a kid, it's probably a good buy. These new developers keep popping out though and I have to say I'm impressed they have not been making shoddy games.

When you mention holding your arm up for the target game are you holding your whole arm up? Although I haven't got this particular game I find it more comfortable to have the top part of my arm down by my side (but probably best to keep it a couple of inches away from your side just in case it causes tracking conflicts) and just use my forearm and hand to aim. Although I do find myself not always keeping to that the whole time like when things get a hectic in Child Of Eden, lol! If you always have your whole arm up I'm guessing that causes your body to work harder as your muscles have to hold up and move around your upper arm so it's more tiring, whereas with the method I use the upper arm usually doesn't have to do much and is more rested. By the way, last I heard was that The Gunstringer can be played sitting down so that might help too.

Yeah I tried the other method but the cursor was going all over the place so you are kind of forced to hold your arm straight out. I'm really curious to see how these other shooters are going to work, I don't know if holding your arm straight out gives you more accuracy as I could move the cursor as I was using a controller, but if so, we need to work out our arm muscles to last in these games lol
