Dance Central Kinect Review
Dance Central

  • Official site http://www.dancecentral.com
  • Developer: Harmonix Music Systems
  • Genre: Music / Rhythm
  • Alternative game name: Dance Central
  • Modes: 2 Player Co-op, Multiplayer, Versus
  • Players: 2
  • Online Features: Achievements, Content Download, Leaderboards
  • Kinect Features: 1-2 Player
  • Kinect Activity Level: Active
  • Uses avatars?: No
  • Age group: 15+

Dance Central - The good
  • Extremely engaging gameplay: follow the dance cards and do the move represented. The on screen character will help you understand the move better.
  • Very good setlist: 32 tracks and all are unlocked from beginning. I’m the farthest from a hip hop/pop enthusiast yet each song I’ve played (about 10) has been very fun.
  • Kinect-necessary: Some other launch games may or may not be more fun with Kinect versus a normal controller. Not the case with DC. There’s no way the Wii or Move could have this game and be able to score you the same way. This is game enhanced by Kinect; a very good determinant between the great and just good (and bad) games.
  • Visually Impressive- very vibrant levels/characters. There’s no mistaking this is a dance club game. Also, the HD is very pleasant to look at.
  • Workout- You will have to move, a lot. And not just normal body movements. After some songs you will feel your legs and arms ache. Make no mistake as the game case does say Active gameplay for a reason.
  • Practice, Practice: There is a practice mode in the game that allows you to nail moves as the mode slows it down and lets you understand it. Extremely helpful as the Hard mode is really, well, hard.
  • Unique Dancing: Each song’s dancing is unique to the song and feels natural with the song. The moves aren’t just copied and pasted from one song to the next.
  • Pictures/Video during Freestyle: Very cool feature where the game takes photos during certain dance moves, and also there’s an instant playback 3 second or so video played after your freestyle.
  • Dance Battle- The back and forth mode in is this is genuine fun, so long as you’re both as good, err, bad at dancing. Any sort of skill difference though, and the mode loses some fun. Essentially one player dances a part of the song, and the next player does his own part of the song, and it’s a back and forth battle to see who earns the most points.

Dance Central - The not so good
  • Workout- You will feel aches, and playing for any longer than a half hour may be hard to accomplish. Again, I listed this as both good/bad because it’s up to players to interpret the physical toll of the game. I enjoy the workout you get, but others may not.
  • Basic- This is essentially the Guitar Hero 1 of dance games. Incredibly immersive, but lacks a variety of game styles. Slightly disappointing.
  • DLC Song Price- Comes at 240 MS points. Understandable as they do need to hire dancers for moves per each song though.
  • Freestyle mode: I understand the inclusion of this gameplay element. It’s not that there’s anything wrong with it, and in fact the video it records will lead to instant laughs. It feels like it’s not connected to the rest of the song. I don’t know the best way to explain it, but it’s a sort of head scratcher. You don’t really know what to do, and most of the songs I found myself repeating the simplest dance from the song. Good idea, just sort of unnecessary.
  • Multiplayer- There’s a 2 player back-and-forth mode, but that’s it. This is really disappointing as an online dance battle mode, especially one where both players play at the same time, would have been very, very fun.

Dance Central - Multiplayer options
There is a multiplayer component, where you and a partner take turns doing the song. You don’t dance at the same time. This game’s multiplayer is more about laughing in a circle as a friend plays.

Conclusion

Dance Central was hyped the “hardcore” game of the launch titles and it passes this test with flying colors. The dancing and songs here are all truly immersive. This game makes full use of Kinect, and without it, it wouldn’t be possible. You will feel the aches of dancing and moving around and this is up to each user to decide whether this is good or bad.
Now, I will say I’m disappointed. I absolutely love this game, and it’s very worth $50. However, the greatness that Harmonix created with Rock Band leads to uneasiness with Dance Central. Where’s the Dance Tour mode? Where’s the character creation area? Where’s the dressing room? Where can I unlock new dance outfits with knockoffs of Michael Jackson’s attire left and right? We all know, at least after you play, that a sequel, which will include all of this and probably more, is inevitable. This game deserves a sequel. More importantly though, even after some slight disappointments, is that this game is good enough to not need a sequel.

I didn't want to attach a number on this review. But if I were to grade it, I would give it an A-. I'm not saying it's a 90 per se. It just does what we could ask out of a Kinect game, with a very fun experience. It get's an A-, because of some features I feel that could have been added, especially since we know what Harmonix is capable of.

RE: Dance Central- Worth the hype?- BrandNew's Review
I must say that this is a great review! And I agree that Dance Central could use an online multiplayer mode. But who knows, maybe they will have an update that includes it in the future.

Great review! You have sold me. Unfortunately I have already purchased Kinect Sports and Your Shape. I'll get Dance Central before Thanksgiving when the family comes over.

I agree with most of your points in the review. My only response is to your "freestyle mode" negative. I feel it's a great inclusion to have some segment where you do your own thing. But you're right, I think it can be implemented better. It's always just some spot in the middle of the song (almost like a breather or intermission before you have to get ready to follow more dance cards) and sometimes the transitions between scripted moves and the freestyle don't really...flow...but it's nice for people who actually dance. I could always find some new moves to do for every song depending on the vibe of it. For some I'd flex, some I'd go back to my raver days (haha), some I'd breakdance and bust out a windmill or something, others I'd pop and lock, or disco, or more flowy interpretive type thing.

I would guess that in future versions they'll maybe add more freestyle sections.

My only real negative about all these music games is that when they do new types (like this, or like DJ Hero) the first is always barebones like the way guitarhero/rockband started. Like they purposely keep it that way to have future elements to make the sequels worthwhile. Like the next will have a minimal "campaign" mode and then the third will probably have a much better fleshed out "campaign/tourmode" and even more freestyle elements. Can't uhh...shoot their load prematurely...so to speak. ha Wink

Funny you say that you've purchased Kinect Sports and Your Shaped Fitness, but not Dance Central. Because I've already bought Dance Central, and plan on getting Kinect Sports and Your Shape Fitness soon too Tongue.

IMO, DC makes fitness games like Your Shape somewhat unnecessary. You get a great workout playing DC and it's far more entertaining and engaging than playing a fitness game.

Although you can't play online, you can compare your scores with those of your friends online, just thought people would like to know that.
