Remember the news about Screen Digest’s prediction with regards to Kinect sales? At that time, it was said that Kinect will reach 7.6 million units sold by the end of 2011; in total. It appears that Screen Digest was misquoted by GameSpot in the original article. Read on to find out their actual prediction!
The actual prediction
It seems that Screen Digest meant to say that the 7.6 million Kinect units sold will be in 2011 and not by the end of 2011. So, it referred strictly to the year of 2011. Now, that’s quite a big difference, isn’t it?
Screen Digest clarified the initial news:
Our [data] actually refers to new Move and Kinect enabled consoles added during 2011, not installed base, which we forecast to be 11.7 million for Move and 12.1 million for Kinect by end of 2011.
- Piers Harding-Rolls, Screen Digest
Moreover, Corellianrogue (who commented on our previous post) pointed out that the numbers for Move sales could not be compared with Kinect sales as buying additional wands will also count as Move sales. Screen Digest clarified, also, what the Move numbers actually represent:
Please note that the Move numbers refer to Move-enabled consoles and not total Move peripheral sales (as a % are bought for multiplayer gaming on single consoles).
- Piers Harding-Rolls, Screen Digest
HULIQ’s prediction
HULIQ reacted at the misquoted prediction from Screen Digest about Kinect sales and presented their own numbers:
Though we are just beginning to enter the post-Christmas shopping period, the Kinect appears to be maintaining a good deal of its earlier momentum. Considering that it is currently selling 2.5 million (give or take) per month, the Screen Digest prediction is quite conservative in HULIQ’s estimation. It is natural that sales will decrease post-launch and outside of the Christmas season, but a rate of 500,000 units per month is more than reasonable, which would put the install base north of 10 million by the end of 2011.
- Huliq
We can only agree that Kinect sales will exceed 10 million units, can’t we?
If you don’t have Kinect yet, go to your local web store and order it right now!
