Mass Effect 3 is getting Kinect voice control implementation, but according to BioWare’s general manager Aaryn Flynn the company also toyed with the idea to give Mass Effect 3 motion controls. In an interview he reveals why this functionality was dropped in the final version of the game.
Mass Effect 3 and motion controls
In an interview with venturebeat, Aaryn Flynn talks about the Kinect functionality of the game and the development of it. When he is asked if they experimented with gesture based controls he answers this:
We looked into it. But unfortunately, it has a lot more technological requirements. We also weren’t sure the gestures fit in with the authentic experience. The good news is voice worked out very well.
But instead of gestures the team fully dedicated themselves to getting voice commands in the game, which according to Aaryn works extremely well and makes Mass Effect 3 a very responsive game. In fact, he says that you will be able to play Mass Effect 3 fast with the use of Kinect. When asked if Kinect enables players to play faster he responds with:
In that sense, that’s correct. A lot of players will find they can control Shepard and don’t have to pause the game. It’s more fluid and immersive.
So in that way, Mass Effect 3 will truly be a “Better with Kinect” game. Can’t wait to get my hands on it!
